Junior Taylor Lobb changed her major from journalism to public relations to pursue a style of writing she finds more promising and fulfilling.
Lobb has changed her major three times, first studying nursing before journalism and public relations.
She began studying nursing at Grand Canyon University in Arizona, but only chose her major for financial stability.
“I did not do it because I really liked it, and I was struggling while I was there,” she said.
Lobb moved back to California to study at Las Positas College after her mother died to support her family.
Lobb’s sister, Madison, said the move made their family happy and that their mother’s death inspired Taylor to write.
“After something like that does happen, you need to put your energy into something to make your life better, and for her that was writing,” Madison Lobb said.
After earning her associate degree in journalism from Las Positas College in 2 years, Taylor Lobb changed majors again after receiving backlash for an article she wrote about a conservative group on campus.
Lobb said her main reason for leaving journalism was that it is “a dying industry,” and that public relations suits her writing style.
Lobb did not enjoy putting her writing on display for the public and said her creative instincts conflicted with journalistic style.
“I have a natural instinct to put my own twist on things, which does not go well when you are writing as a journalist,” she said.
Lobb prefers public relations to journalism because it emphasizes face-to-face communication, which is easy for her.
“I am just naturally good at communicating with people,” she said.
Public relations is closely related to her job, where she works in member relations at Ruby Hill Country Club in Pleasanton, California.
Madison Lobb lives with her sister along with two other roommates and works with her sister at Ruby Hill Country Club.
Madison said working with her sister as her boss can be stressful, but that she loves living with her.
“It is always like living with your best friend, it is always getting to hang out with them,” she said.
After starting her first semester at San Jose State University, Lobb joined the chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America on campus.
Lobb said she would like to find a new job soon but will see where life takes her as she continues to study at San Jose State.
